Pellet fuel is the single biggest factor in how well a pellet stove performs. Good wood pellets burn with a clean, bright flame, while damp or dusty pellets darken the glass, clog the burn pot and deliver less heat.
How to Recognise Quality Pellets

EN plus A1 is the widely accepted quality reference for domestic pellet stoves. A quick check at home: drop a handful of pellets into a glass of water. Well-compressed pellets are dense and sink; pellets that float point to poor compression. Pellets that leave a lot of dust on your palm will also increase cleaning work.
How Wood Pellets Are Made
Sawdust and shavings from timber processing are dried, ground and pressed through a die under high pressure. The natural lignin in wood acts as a binder under heat and pressure, so quality pellets need no added glue. The pellets are then cooled, screened and bagged; the typical diameter is 6 mm.
